2014 Seminar / Symposium Schedule

These seminars or symposiums will be prepared by the team leaders and will be held at The Jimma University Hospital.They will be conducted during the volunteers’ visit. There will be a broad range of important topics covered.

The target audience: Pediatrics staff, residents, interns, nurses, midwives and local health post personnel.

2014 Upcoming HANDS Seminars/Symposiums

  1. Topic: “Educational Symposium in Neonatal Resuscitation and Central Line Placement”
  2. First Trip Date: April 2014 Team Leader: Dr Arebu Abdu
    Second Trip Date: October, 2014 Team Leader: Dr Mesfin Woldesenbet
    Synopsis:
    Review and discuss the present algorithm for neonatal resuscitation with scheduled mock codes. Provide training on central line placement and provide opportunities for practical sessions.

  3. Topic: “Educational Symposium in Neonatal Nutrition”

    Second Trip Date: October, 2014 Team Leader: Dr Mesfin Woldesenbet
    Synopsis:
    Review the nutritional requirements of term and preterm infants. Provide training in appropriate nutrition and how to provide adequate post discharge support.

  5. Topic: “Neonatal Cardiology”

    Synopsis:
    Discuss the common neonatal cardiac pathologies diagnosis and management. Review the transition from intrauterine to extra-uterine adaptation and the pathologies related to the failure of this transition.

  7. Topic: “Neonatal Respiratory Care”

    Synopsis:
    Discuss approach and management of common respiratory pathologies. Provide training on use of Ventilators and Bubble CPAP. Discuss interpretation of radiological and laboratory data.

    Synopsis:
    Review the common infectious pathologies involved in neonatal care and how to manage these risks when providing care. Review use and monitoring of different antibiotics. Discuss different methods of preventing neonatal infections.
